Energy Program

Summary

The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) recognizes that addressing energy use, conservation, and production is critical to the healthy future of Aquidneck Island.

In 2009 it developed the Island Energy Program with the goals of educating and empowering island communities to better understand the dynamics of island energy use and production and to further the development of sustainable energy practices. The Island Energy Program's activities include:

Island Energy Alliance: AIPC has collaborated with local government officials, non-profit leaders, and business owners to build an Island Energy Alliance, a group dedicated to promoting energy efficiency and conservation.

Outreach: In April AIPC led a day-long, energy workshop for high-school students, and he will host information tables at local events throughout the summer.

Community Education, Outreach & Communication: The AIPC Energy Program has coordinated and participated in workshops, outreach, and educational events with local partners such as the East Bay MET School, Neighborhood Energy Challenge, People's Power and Light, and National Grid Energy Action Aquidneck and Jamestown to encourage energy savings.

AIPC distributes a monthly e-newsletter to more than 900 subscribers each month, and it hosts an Energy Program website that serves as a hub for Energy Alliance members, energy professionals, community members, students, and others interested in energy conservation and alternatives for the island.

Municipal and School District Support: The Energy Program strives to enhance energy conservation and efficiency measures for municipal and school buildings by working with facility managers and public employees.

Residential and Small Business: AIPC Energy Program works to communicate the fiscal and environmental benefits of energy conservation and renewable energy sources to Island residents and business through the promotion of incentives based programs and listing local service providers.
