EPA Smart Growth
The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) received an Environmental Protection Agency grant to implement elements of the West Side Master Plan. The organization worked with the three Aquidneck communities to review local ordinances and regulations and make recommendations on how to implement the plan.

Bailey Brook Watershed
AIPC participated in a comprehensive study of the Bailey Brook Watershed, which is the source of much of Newport's drinking water. The final report includes an assessment of development encroachment into watershed protection zones, flooding and run-off issues, and water quality management.

The study explored the creation of the Shoreline Drive Corridor proposed in the West Side Master Plan. It focused on the realignment of the Stringham/Burma Road "hairpin" intersection at the north end of the corridor, and explored opening up the Simonpietri Drive connector to Coddington Highway.

AIPC investigated the feasibility of constructing a dedicated multi-use/bike path adjacent to Burma Road and the Newport Secondary rail corridor from Chases Lane (Naval Station Newport) to the Stringham Road railroad grade crossing in Melville.

AIPC worked with the island communities to develop a list of projects for inclusion in the State of Rhode Island's 2006-2007 Transportation Improvement Program.
