Traffic Management Program
Summary
The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) completed the Aquidneck Island Regional Traffic Incident Management Plan (Traffic Plan) in July 2011.
The Traffic Plan provides recommendations for state and local officials and other stakeholders to improve the management of traffic problems caused by Aquidneck Island's many special events, construction projects, and other traffic incidents with the overall goals of improving communication, increasing safety and decreasing congestion for island drivers.
The document's key recommendations include:
- Creation of an Island Traffic Task Force to manage traffic problems and improve communication among local safety officials, event organizers, and state agencies.
- Development of an island-wide special event calendar and permit notification system.
- Installation of portable and permanent electronic message boards at critical locations on the island.
- Expanded use of remote parking facilities and transit to ease traffic problems during special events.

AIPC developed the Traffic Plan over eighteen months through the support of a grant from the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program. A standing committee composed of representatives from the island's municipal police departments, Rhode Island Department of Transportation, Rhode Island State Police, Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, Preservation Society of Newport, and the Newport and Bristol County Convention and Visitors Bureau guided the development of the plan, and the firm of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin served as project consultants.
The Traffic Plan includes a phased implementation element that provides a detailed guide for the realization of its goals and objectives. As the project's lead agency, AIPC will work Aquidneck Island's traffic stakeholders to advance the Plan's recommendations.
A grant from the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program supported the project.
